The philosophy behind teaching Economics at SSE

Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE) established in 2008, is an integral part of Symbiosis International University, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Economics.

The B.Sc. (Economics) Honours programme at SSE, is devised to create a new class of academicians and professionals, whose strong foundation is laid through a multi-disciplinary framework and dynamic, constantly updated syllabus which, besides including pure Economics, explores its critical association with Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Environment, Law and Politics.

The pedagogy at SSE stretches far beyond books. Besides academic inputs, SSE equips the student with a strong theoretical, analytical and empirical understanding of the subject matter through a technologically current pedagogy. This provides a strong foundation which prepares SSE graduates to become pragmatic professionals, competent decision and policy makers, and above all sensitive human beings.

Through a holistic economics education rooted in the real world, students will be capable of providing an integrated framework to various trade and developmental economic issues, and all other concerns needed to be addressed at the micro and macro levels of an economy.

With the help of practical internships, students will also evolve with the philosophy of the subject matter, helping them strongly align themselves with the principles, ethics and values which they had only read about thus far. SSE believes this is absolutely crucial in a society which is constantly in flux.

This sensitization continues through real world projects and dissertations that are aimed at reinforcing learnings keeping in line with the pedagogy and philosophy. Interacting with industry leaders and experts during guest lectures serves to drive home this point.

SSE further deepens a holistic Economics education with a broad world view through the Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE). The Centre for Academic Writing supports students in writing essays, papers and reports of various types. It also publishes an annual journal – Oeconomia Scriptis-that is a compilation of outstanding academic writing, giving students a platform to showcase their learnings.

The academic calendar at SSE includes various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, which further prepare students to cope with difficult tasks, time management, and team work, grooming them for life ahead. The philosophy at SSE encourages an open door approach, open to feedback and constructive criticism; creating a ground for a sound learning experience. The environment is disciplined and rigorous, at the same time leaving plenty of room for creativity, originality and student initiatives.
